AP Economics

AP Economics Tutoring in NYC

Econ gets sold as the “friendly” AP; no calculus, lots of common sense. But it doesn’t take long for the AP tests to separate the educated-guessers from those with true understanding. In fact, they’re designed to do exactly that.

Unfortunately, econ is often taught by whomever had a free period, rather than someone who understands the ins and outs of the field. My economics degree is a rare qualification that helps me recognize when a student knows less than they should about a given topic.

Where AP students miss points the most

Graphs as pictures, not arguments

Students memorize that the curve shifts right without knowing what the shift claims about the world. On exam day, a relabeled axis breaks the whole memorized picture.

The common-sense trap

Opportunity cost, comparative advantage, price controls — the test is engineered so the intuitive answer is the wrong one. Intuition needs replacing with a model, not polishing.

The skipped causal link

Macro FRQs award points per link in the chain: rates fall, so investment rises, so demand shifts. Students skip the "obvious" middle links — which are exactly the graded ones.
